Heidi Allan’s Practice is an audiology and speech therapy centre that is home to qualified and experienced professionals that can assist with a range of audiology and communication requirements. Heidi Allan heads up our practice and the team consists of 2 audiologists and 2 speech and language therapists, as well as administration and support staff. Heidi Allan’s Practice is also a proud member of the Reconnect Audiology Network – a network of independent audiologists around South Africa dedicated to providing an ethical and patient-centred experience with high standards of audiological care.

Patients are seen at the consulting rooms at uMhlanga Hospital Medical Centre and at Reconnect Balance Clinic at Hillcrest Hospital. The practice also provides speech therapy to many children at schools in KwaZulu-Natal, including Clifton Preparatory and High School, Durban Girls College, Maris Stella and Durban Preparatory High School, while providing hearing screening services to more than 30 schools from Richards Bay to Underberg.

Hearing Assessment

The cost of a full diagnostic hearing assessment depends on the nature of the patient’s condition and what tests the audiologist is required to conduct. The cost one can expect is about R2080.00, which most medical aids will cover depending on what medical aid you are with and scheme you are on.

The aim of the assessment is to establish whether there is a hearing loss, and if a hearing loss is identified, to establish what has caused the hearing loss. If a medical condition such as wax in the ear, middle ear infection, a perforated ear drum etc. exists, that has caused a temporary, treatable condition, the patient will be referred for a medical opinion and treatment.

CAPD

The cost depends on the nature of the patient’s condition and what CAPD tests the audiologist needs to conduct. On average, the cost is between R4500.00 and R4800.00, which is usually fully covered by medical aids depending on what medical aid you are with and scheme you are on.

Language is learned through listening. To learn a language, one needs to be able to attend to, listen to, and separate important speech from all the other noises of daily living, at home, at school and socially. When one’s Central Auditory Processing skills are weak, the child or adult may experience auditory overload, making communication and learning a real challenge.

Hearing Aids-on-Contract

It is now possible to acquire hearing aids on a contract basis with easy terms over 36 months including loss insurance and the manufacturers’ warranty/service plan. Please enquire with our audiologists for more on this service.

If you want to know how to maintain your hearing aids, there are many online videos available to watch. Most hearing aid companies have instruction videos on their websites, showing wearers how to take care of their hearing aids effectively.

Speech Therapy

A speech assessment is approximately R3680.00 of which most medical aids cover about R2552.00, medical aid and scheme dependent. After the initial assessment conducted by a qualified speech therapist at our practice, speech therapy sessions are charged at R460.00 (incl. VAT) per ½ hour session and most medical aids cover about R275.00 of this amount.

A voice assessment is R1840.00 and most medical aids cover about R1283.00 of the total amount, depending on what medical aid you are with and what scheme you are on. Once your assessment is complete, speech therapy sessions cost R460.00 (incl. VAT) per ½ hour session and most medical aids cover about R275.00 of this amount.

It is our aim to provide reliable assistance for hearing, balance, and speech and language difficulties to clients of all ages at our various practices. Our Umhlanga and Hillcrest branches are now open on most Saturday mornings as well to accommodate more clients.
